A rectangular enamel advertising sign for T. & H. Smith’s Coffee Essence. The sign features a white ground with black lettering in a variety of styles, including decorative calligraphic script for the brand name and product. A central black banner contains the wording GOLD · MEDAL in white serif characters. The lower section is divided by a decorative linear device and reads FULL STRENGTH to the left and ABSOLUTE PURITY to the right. The bottom edge is marked Manufactory EDINBURGH. A small maker’s mark is printed in grey along the bottom right edge reading FALKIRK IRON CO. The sign is constructed from heavy metal with a vitreous finish. The reverse is plain dark metal with a textured, oxidised surface.

Condition report:

The sign exhibits significant corrosion and metal loss along all four edges and at the corners (photo 1). Several impact chips are visible to the enamel surface, notably above the letter M in Smith\'s and near the top edge, exposing the dark metal substrate (photo 3). Fine spider-web crazing is present across the white enamel ground, along with various surface scratches (photo 3).
