Lot 589: Prudential Assurance Company Enamel Advertising Sign

A double sided cut-out advertising sign for the Prudential Assurance Company, featuring a hand-painted heraldic achievement. The central escutcheon is set on a sable field with three or horizontal bars, each with an embattled upper edge. The shield is flanked by argent flanches, each charged with three gules martlets. Above the shield sits a steel close helm with gold detailing and a red and gold torse, surmounted by a crest depicting a female figure in a white robe and red cloak standing beside a tree stump. The figure holds a hand mirror and stands adjacent to a glass hour-glass. The achievement is framed by elaborate red, gold, and black scrolling mantling. A white scroll at the base with red borders bears the Latin motto FORTIS QUI PRUDENS. The sign is constructed from sheet metal with a cream-coloured enamel base. A small hole is present in the centre of the shield.
