Lot 427: Prestone Anti-Freeze Enamel Advertising Sign Thermometer

A large scale embossed enamel advertising thermometer for Prestone Anti-Freeze. The sign features a vertical cream ground with a central temperature scale and an integrated glass thermometer tube. The header displays the Prestone brand name in white block lettering within a blue shield device, with Anti-Freeze and Trade-Mark appearing below. The lower section includes a red oval featuring the slogan You’re Safe… And You Know It in white. The central scale includes a red horizontal line at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, marked Water to the left and Freezes to the right. The face is marked P.R. APP’D NO. 339 TC in small lettering near the top of the scale. The reverse includes a central wooden support for the thermometer tube which is stamped MADE IN USA.

Condition report:
The sign is in fair original condition with notable areas of wear. There is significant enamel loss and heavy oxidation to the metal at the top and bottom mounting points (photos 3 and 5). Chipping and enamel loss are visible along the edges, most prominently on the right side of the blue header and the right edge of the red lower oval (photos 3 and 5). The face shows vertical staining and streaking throughout the cream section, alongside general surface pitting and small chips (photo 4). The original glass thermometer tube is present and intact, although the mounting screws show surface rust (photo 4). The accuracy of the thermometer is untested.
