Lot 415: British Dominions Empire Motor Policy Motoring Enamel Advertising Sign
4 views
A motoring enamel advertising sign for the British Dominions Empire Motor Policy, featuring a dark green ground with a central graphic illustration of an early red motor car driving through a coastal landscape. The car radiator is inscribed EMPIRE MOTOR POLICY in gold block lettering on a black field. The main header reads BRITISH DOMINIONS in orange and white serif lettering with black outlining, framed within a rope-border cartouche. The top edge is marked Service AUTHORIZED Agent, flanking a central Eagle Star logo depicting a bird perched on a pedestal dated 1807. The lower section includes the wording INSTANT FREE TOWING REPAIRS, with FREE contained within a rope-style oval. A lower border panel states ASSETS EXCEED £19,000,000. The bottom center edge bears a printed maker’s mark reading BUSINESS BUILDERS LTD LONDON.
Condition report:
The sign exhibits significant condition issues throughout. There are extensive areas of enamel loss and heavy corrosion across the lower third of the sign, particularly affecting the wheels of the car graphic and the bottom text panels (photo 1). Multiple impact chips with exposed rusted metal are visible across the central field (photo 6). The bottom left corner is misshapen with structural loss to the metal (photo 9). The edges show consistent chipping and rust (photo 11). The reverse is uniformly and heavily oxidized with a thick layer of surface rust (photo 12).
