A very rare cylindrical lithographed tin for Challenge Motor Grease, produced by Challenge Oils Ltd. of London. The body features a yellow ground with red and black lettering within a decorative cartouche, reading CHALLENGE in red shadowed block letters above Motor Grease in black script. The lower section is marked in black block letters CHALLENGE OILS LTD. LONDON. N. The lid displays a red circular border containing black printed instructions headed HOW TO FILL GREASE GUN, followed by three numbered steps for filling a gun barrel. The text at the base of the lid reads This Grease can also be used for other purposes.
Height: Approximately 4 inches (10.2 cm)
Diameter: Approximately 3 5/8 inches (9.2 cm).
Condition report:
The tin shows a nicely patinated state with surface oxidation and pitting, most prominent on the lid and around the lower rim (photo 3). Scuffing, and scratches are visible to the lithography, particularly through the word Motor on the body (photo 2).
