A double-sided cast metal advertising sign for Wills’s Capstan tobacco. The sign is of octagonal form with a blue frame surrounding a circular yellow field. The brand name Wills’s Capstan is cast in raised blue relief block lettering on both sides. The piece retains its two original integrated cast hanging brackets at the upper edge. A white adhesive label is affixed to one side reading Snooker’s Paradise Stall No E26 £240 (photo 2).
18 inches wide
19 inches high (body only)
22 inches overall height.
Condition report:
The sign is in heavily weathered condition. There is extensive paint loss, flaking and chipping to the yellow and blue surfaces throughout (photos 1, 2). Amateur over-painting is evident to the light blue areas. The yellow ground shows significant pitting and vertical dark streaking (photo 1). Surface oxidation and corrosion are present on the relief lettering and the hanging brackets (photos 1, 2). The casting remains structurally sound despite surface degradation.
