Lot 304: Wills's Woodbines Metal Advertising Sign

A double-sided cast iron advertising sign featuring a rectangular header and an oval main body. The header is over-painted with a blue ground and the text REPAIRS in red block lettering with white outlines - this is likely to be the result of alternative usage to its original purpose. The oval section displays a dark green ground with WILLS’S in white capitals above WOODBINES in larger white block capitals. The sign is of heavy cast metal construction with integrated mounting lugs to one side and a suspension loop at the top of the header.
26.5 inches wide, 24.5 inches high.
Condition report:
The sign is in a heavily weathered condition. Both sides show extensive surface corrosion and pitting to the metal (photos 1 and 2). Significant paint loss and flaking is visible across the entire surface, particularly affecting the red lettering in the header and the green background of the oval (photos 1 and 2). There are white mineral deposits and oxidation present on the green ground (photos 1 and 2). The mounting lugs show heavy rust, and one bracket appears partially degraded (photo 2). The edges of the casting show chipping and loss of the original finish (photos 1 and 2).
