Lot 172: Vintage Glass Wild Woodbine Cigarettes Advertising Ashtray

A circular glass advertising ashtray for Wild Woodbine cigarettes. The ashtray features a central graphic depicting a classic pack of Wild Woodbine cigarettes, applied to the underside of the glass base. The packaging graphic includes the text WILD WOODBINE Cigarettes at the top and main panels. Below the central illustration, the text reads W.D. & H.O. WILLS. BRISTOL & LONDON. A side panel on the graphic bears the inscription THIS LABEL IS ISSUED BY THE IMPERIAL TOBACCO CO. (OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND), LIMITED and lists REGISTERED TRADE MARKS NOS. 66892, 49798 & 5908. The graphic is backed with layers of red and yellow paint applied to the underside of the vessel. The clear glass body is molded with three cigarette rests around the rim.
Diameter: approximately 10 cm (derived from comparison with the standard 14 cm Sharpie pen in photo 3).
Condition report:
The item is in fair vintage condition with significant wear to the reverse-applied decoration. There is extensive flaking and loss to the red and yellow backing paint across the underside (photo 2). Notable green substance or paint residue is present on the face of the cigarette pack graphic (photo 1) and on the yellow reverse side (photo 2). The glass displays general surface scratches consistent with use and age, and there is visible yellowing and residue buildup around the inner rim and rests (photo 1). The central graphic decal appears slightly misaligned from the true centre of the glass base (photo 1).
