A large vertical rectangular self-framed lithographed tin advertising sign for Grape-Nuts cereal. The central illustration depicts a young girl dressed in a blue frock, red cape and straw hat walking alongside a large St. Bernard dog. The dog carries a woven shopping basket in its mouth, and a woman is visible in the background watching from a garden gate. The sign features a decorative embossed border stamped into the metal to simulate a carved, gilded wood frame. Printed text to the lower section reads To school well fed on Grape-Nuts There is a Reason. A small printed number (2776) is located in the bottom left corner. The reverse is finished in a plain green paint with a hanging wire attached.
Height 30 1/4 inches, width 20 1/4 inches.
Condition report:
The sign exhibits widespread oxidation and rust pitting across the front surface, which is particularly concentrated in the lower text area and within the crevices of the embossed frame border (photos 1, 3 and 4). There are numerous small paint chips, surface scratches and scuffs throughout the central image (photo 2). The reverse shows significant surface rust and corrosion (photo 7).
