An Ogden’s St Julien Tobacco advertising showcard featuring a multi-figure humorous scene set outside a tavern. The central composition depicts a man in 18th-century style dress including a blue coat and buff breeches, seated on a green bench while smoking a long clay pipe. He holds a broadside printed with Smoke OGDEN’S ST JULIEN TOBACCO. Flanking him are two figures looking from windows; the figure to the right is shown pouring liquid from a bottle into the central character’s top hat. The scene is finished with tavern details including a ceramic pitcher and a glass of ale. The display features bold yellow block lettering reading OGDEN’S across the top and ST JULIEN TOBACCO to the lower section. Housed behind glass in a dark-stained molded wooden frame with carved decorative inner borders. The reverse is finished with brown paper and fitted with three modern brass wall-mounting brackets.
Overall height: 24 1/8 inches
Overall width: 17 3/4 inches.
Condition report:
The print retains bright colours and is in good overall condition, showing minor surface irregularities and a small white mark on the bench near the tobacco pack (photo 4). The glass is intact with minor surface scuffs. The wooden frame shows significant wear consistent with age, including chips to the finish, loss of stain along the edges, and minor cracks to the timber at the corners and bottom rail (photos 5 and 6). The backing paper and mounting hardware are later additions (photo 7).
