A framed lithographic advertising showcard for Waverley Cigarettes. The print features a central illustration of a young woman with a bobbed blonde hairstyle, wearing a pink long-sleeved blouse and blue patterned skirt, seated on a turned-leg stool with a lit cigarette in hand. Wording includes the brand name ‘Waverley’ in script to the upper left, alongside pricing ’10 FOR 6d., 20 FOR 1/-‘ and the slogan ‘Jolly fine!’ to the lower right. The showcard is housed in a decorative grain-painted frame with a faux-tortoiseshell effect finish. The bottom rail of the frame is embossed with the manufacturer name ‘LAMBERT & BUTLER’. A small printer’s logo is present to the lower left corner of the print, though the characters are not clearly legible. The reverse is finished with wooden backing boards and modern adhesive tape.
Measurements: 19 1/8 inches wide by 23 3/4 inches high.
Condition report:
The lithographic print shows age-related wear including scattered foxing, light staining, and minor surface marks throughout the background (photo 2 and 3). The original frame exhibits significant condition issues, with the decorative surface finish flaking and peeling, particularly along the bottom edge where the black under-layer is exposed (photo 4). The back of the frame has been stabilized with modern brown adhesive tape over older wooden backing boards (photo 7). The three brass mounting brackets appear to be later additions.
