A framed Advertising Showcard for Non-Flam, described as the Best Substitute for Wool. The dark ground features a central chromolithographic illustration of a young girl in a pale blue nightgown on a carpeted staircase, holding a doll and a black cat. A fallen, lit candle is shown in contact with the hem of her gown without ignition. Wording includes WON’T CATCH FIRE. EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER WASHING, SOFT, WARM, DURABLE and HARMLESS TO THE SKIN. SEE MR CARTER BELL’S CERTIFICATE. A winged trade mark emblem is positioned to the left, marked REGISTERED TRADE MARK N. 73228. The bottom margin is printed with the mark ALF COOKE. LTD. LEEDS. Housed in a decorative frame with green and gilt-relief finish and a cream inner slip.
Measurements: 21 1/4 inches by 35 inches overall.
Condition report:
Significant surface loss and scuffing is present to the upper text field around the word SUBSTITUTE (photo 5). Small nicks and minor scratches are scattered across the dark background (photo 2). The frame shows general age-related wear including minor scuffs to the gilt highlights and dust accumulation in the carvings (photo 6). The reverse brown paper backing is torn in several places (photo 8). There are areas of significant damage and touching up, notably the left border and the area above the child\'s head.
