Lot 547: John Bull Cycle Tyre Repair Service Cabinet

A wooden counter-top display cabinet for the John Bull Rubber Co. Ltd. The arched top panel features a dark ground with gold-toned lettering reading ‘JOHN BULL’ flanking a central graphic of the John Bull character in a Union Jack waistcoat pointing upwards. Below, the slogan reads ‘MADE FOR THE MAN WHO WILL HAVE THE BEST’. The curved front face is protected by a clear panel held by a dark-painted wooden frame with brass-tone studs. The yellow-painted interior contains three horizontal tiers divided into fourteen compartments by wooden partitions. Each compartment is fitted with a printed paper label identifying stock, including ‘SMALL TUBES OF SOLUTION’, ‘VALVE TUBING’, ‘FRENCH CHALK’, and ‘RIM TAPES’. The curved dark-painted base panel carries gold-toned lettering reading ‘CYCLE TYRE REPAIR SERVICE’. The reverse shows an open-backed design with twelve pigeon-hole compartments. The brand name ‘JOHN BULL’ is printed in bold serif capitals.

Condition report:
The cabinet shows signs of age-related wear and a shop-worn patina. Scuffs, paint loss, and small chips are evident to the wooden frame, particularly along the base edges and corners (photo 1 and 4). The yellow paint and paper labels have darkened and yellowed over time. The label for \'SMALL TUBES OF SOLUTION\' shows slight lifting at one corner (photo 2). The clear front panel exhibits light surface scratches and minor yellowing (photo 3). Heavier staining and surface wear are visible on the rear wooden surfaces and shelf edges (photo 5).
