A pair of shaped Etched Glass Advertising Panels for Monaet’s Furnishing Stores of Middlesbrough formerly used for advertising on trams. The panels feature a dark ground with silvered and white lettering and graphics in the verre églomisé style. The top panel advertises household items on easy terms, featuring a central vignette of a box mangle or wringer and text stating ‘Furnish with Monaet’s where you can rely on getting good value & be protected in case of illness or out of employment’. The bottom panel displays a large Victorian-style brass and iron bedstead with text reading ‘Stop car at Monaet’s Furnishing Stores for cash or credit’. Both signs include the address ‘144 Newport Rd Corner of Church St M’bro’ and ‘Middlesboro’. The glass is set within shaped wooden frames.
Width: 23 1/2 inches
Height: 11 3/4 inches.
Condition report:
The glass panels are intact with no major cracks, although light surface scratching is visible across both (photo 1). There is significant lifting, flaking, and loss to the dark background paint and silvered lettering, particularly concentrated around the edges and central areas of both signs (photos 4, 5, and 6). The wooden frames show wear consistent with age, including scuffs, scratches, and finish loss (photos 7 and 8). Original metal hanging eyelets remain to the top edges.
