A two-gallon rectangular tinplate petrol can with a weathered red ground. The top surface features an embossed mark reading P.O. positioned above the safety warning PETROLEUM SPIRIT HIGHLY INFLAMMABLE. The front face displays hand-painted black block lettering reading PETROL, with the reverse showing remnants of similar hand-painted characters reading P OL. The can is constructed with a central fixed strap handle and is fitted with a knurled brass screw cap.
Condition report:
The can shows significant age-related wear throughout. There is extensive surface oxidation and rust, particularly concentrated on the top surface (photo 5), the handle, and along the base seams. The red paint is heavily weathered with widespread loss, chipping, and flaking across all faces (photos 1-4). Visible indentations and dents are present on the side panels (photos 2 and 4). The brass screw cap is present and retains a heavy aged patina.
