Lot 401: Mobiloil Gargoyle Glass Advertising Sign

A rare milk glass advertising sign formed as a three-dimensional oil can, measuring approximately 7.75 inches in height by 4.75 inches at the widest point. The central face features black serif lettering for Mobiloil below an arched Gargoyle title and a red gargoyle device. Upper text reads ‘the oil that lubricates most’ with lower text for ‘FOR MULTI-CYLINDER WATER-COOLED ENGINES.’ and ‘VACUUM OIL COMPANY LTD LONDON. S.W.’ The right-hand angled section includes warning text ‘REFUSE THIS CAN IF THE SEAL IS BROKEN’, ‘We do not authorise anyone to refill our cans’ and ‘V.O.C. Ltd.’ A circular price mark ‘4/6’ is positioned to the lower right. The sign retains thick mortar or adhesive residue to the edges and reverse from previous mounting.
