Lot 361: Duckham’s Adcol N.P. Motor Oil Tin
1 view
A one-gallon rectangular motor oil tin for Duckham’s Adcol N.P. Motor Oil. The lithographed tinplate body features a green ground with gold and black detailing. The front face bears the brand name DUCKHAM’S in a stylized serif font above an oval Adcol logo, further marked N.P. MOTOR OIL. The lower section identifies the manufacturer as MANUFACTURED BY ALEXANDER DUCKHAM & CO. LTD. 6, BROAD STREET PLACE, LONDON E.C. 2. The side panels are lithographed with DUCKHAM’S PATENT TELESCOPIC SPOUT alongside a technical illustration of the mechanism. The reverse panel is headed CARBON TEST and displays two comparative circular graphics for DUCKHAM’S N.P. OIL and OIL PREVIOUSLY STANDARDISED, situated above a detailed GRADES TO USE FOR VARIOUS CARS chart listing numerous early 20th-century automotive manufacturers. The base of this panel includes a small printed mark reading COPYRIGHT IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. The tin is fitted with a fixed metal strap handle and a screw-top cap to the upper surface.
Condition report:
The tin displays significant surface oxidation and heavy rust across the top and bottom plates (photos 4 and 5). The lithographed surfaces show widespread wear, scuffing, and paint loss, though the primary text and technical graphics remain largely legible (photos 1, 2, and 3). There are visible dents and deformations to the tin walls, particularly at the corners and base (photo 1). The screw cap is present but appears heavily seized with surface corrosion (photo 5). The item is in as-found condition with accumulated dust and storage debris throughout.
