Lot 322: A Trio of J & J Colman Lithographed Mustard Tins
0 views
A trio of lithographed tinplate advertising containers manufactured for J & J Colman. The first tin is of rectangular form with a hinged lid, decorated with continuous full-colour lithographic scenes depicting the fable of the man, boy, and donkey. The second tin is of bombe tea caddy form with serpentine sides and canted corners, featuring chromolithographed panels of 17th-century figures, courtiers, and sedan chairs within foliate borders. The base of this caddy bears an embossed mark in raised lettering reading J & J COLMAN MUSTARD MANUFACTURERS TO THE QUEEN. The third tin is rectangular with a hinged lid, featuring genre scenes of children at the seaside and dining outdoors; the lid is lithographed with a decorative border and the words COLMAN’S MUSTARD GENUINE. The caddy features an open oval aperture to the top.
Condition report:
All three items exhibit heavy surface wear, scratching, and scuffing consistent with age (photos 1, 2, 3, and 4). There is widespread lithographic paint loss and visible oxidisation to the metal surfaces, particularly to the rims and bases (photos 8, 9, and 10). The top tin lid shows creasing and wear to the lithographed surface (photo 7). The middle caddy is missing its original cover or sliding insert (photo 6). Scattered rust pitting is present to the interiors and exposed metal edges (photo 6).
