Lot 244: Mitchells & Butlers Ales Advertising Slate

A Mitchells & Butlers advertising slate sign featuring a black glass ground decorated with deeply bevelled and gilded lettering. The upper section contains the brewery name in an arched arrangement above a central ampersand. Below this, a central pictorial vignette depicts the Deers Leap registered trade mark, showing a stag leaping between rocky outcrops against a landscape and blue sky. The base of the sign features bold lettering reading ALES. To the bottom left corner is a gilded mark reading 9/34, and the bottom right corner bears a gilded maker mark reading DICKSON 33 KINGS RD LONDON NW1. The sign is fitted with metal mounting tabs to the top and bottom edges.
14.75 inches wide by 30.5 inches high.
Condition report:
The main image and embossed gilded letters are in good condition. The black glass surface shows fine scratches, scuffs, and surface abrasions throughout (photo 4). Small chips and losses to the black backing are visible along the lower edge and at the corners (photo 8). The reverse shows age-related wear and scratching to the backing material (photo 6).
