Lot 225: Dawes Brewery Black Horse Ale & Porter Framed Print
0 views
A Canadian Dawes Brewery framed lithographic advertising print for Black Horse Ale & Porter. The panoramic scene, titled The Favorite, depicts a steeplechase horse race with three jockeys clearing a green hedge. The leading jockey is mounted on a black horse wearing the number 1. The background features a grandstand crowded with spectators flying the British Union Jack and the French Tricolour flags. A pictorial representation of a Black Horse Ale bottle is positioned to the right-hand side, featuring a label reading DAWES BREWERIES MONTREAL, BLACK HORSE ALE, and LACHINE, P.Q. The main lettering reads BIÈRE BLACK HORSE ALE & PORTER in red and black. The sign is housed in a dark-stained wooden frame with incised lettering to the top and bottom rails. The top rail is incised with BRASSERIE DAWES BREWERY within a rectangular cartouche, and the bottom rail is incised with BIERE BLACK HORSE ALE. The reverse is sealed with brown craft paper and adhesive tape.
34 1/2 inches by 16 1/2 inches.
Condition report:
The lithographic print shows moderate foxing and spotting, particularly within the cream-coloured border areas (photos 2 and 3). There is light fading to the overall colours consistent with display (photo 1). The wooden frame exhibits surface wear, including scratches, minor chips to the finish, and loss of definition to the incised lettering (photos 4 and 5). The reverse has been resealed with brown craft paper and adhesive tape (photo 9).
