A colour lithograph advertising print for Diploma The English Crustless Cheese. The composition features a central figure of a child in a white smock and red breeches, carrying a tall stack of circular cheese tins with several shown falling to the ground. The mottled dark ground is set with text reading ‘Come on Miss Diploma!’, ‘Cheddar or Cheshire’, ‘1 1/2d’, and ‘DIPLOMA The ENGLISH CRUSTLESS CHEESE’. Smaller print on the labels of the depicted tins identifies the maker as ‘THE WILTS UNITED DAIRIES LTD LONDON & TROWBRIDGE’. The top right corner is signed in green paint ‘HNorwich’. The piece is glazed and housed in a dark-stained oak frame with a double-row beaded decorative border.
Outer frame measures 36.5 inches by 28.5 inches.
Condition report:
Visible paper rippling and waviness across the sheet beneath the glass (photo 3). Light foxing and small white spots are present, particularly noticeable against the dark background ground (photo 4). The glass exhibits multiple surface scratches and typical reflections (photo 2). The oak frame shows age-related wear including scuffing, chips to the beaded border, and loss to the stained finish on the edges (photo 5). The brown craft paper backing has a small puncture to the right-hand side (photo 8).
