A superb Bishop & Sons Orange Bitters advertising print for the Finsbury, London producer. The design is printed on a pale blue ground with a green and gold foliate scrollwork border. Central armorial imagery features the City of London crest with twin dragon supporters and a red scroll bearing the motto ‘DOMINE DIRIGE NOS’. Lettering is executed in bold Victorian-style typography, including the brand name within a red ribbon banner and ‘ORANGE BITTERS’ in blue and red shadowed characters. A printed mark to the bottom margin reads ‘MACHIN & COMPY PRINTERS 31 LONDON WALL. E.C.’ The piece is mounted in a dark oak frame with decorative moulding and original brass side latches.
Visible image 23 x 19 inches. Overall 27.5 x 23.5 inches.


Condition report:

Significant foxing and water staining are visible across the paper substrate, particularly to the top and bottom margins (photo 1). There is surface lifting and undulation to the paper behind the glass (photo 3). The oak frame shows age-related wear including minor scuffs and surface scratches (photo 7). The reverse shows damp staining to the cloth backing (photo 6). Brass hardware is intact.
