An enamel advertising thermometer sign for Stephens’ Inks, mounted on a dark-stained wooden backing board. The white ground convex plate features the brand name in flowing black script lettering at the top and bottom. The central section houses a glass spirit tube with red fluid, set between dual scales for Fahrenheit and Centigrade. The Fahrenheit scale includes reference markers for Blood Heat, Health, and Freez. The base of the plate bears the printed maker’s mark Jordan Bilston at the left, the numbers 7/13 at the centre, and REGD 165235-6 above TRADE MARK 54860 at the right. The enamel plate measures 12 inches wide, with an overall height of 63 inches and a board width of 13.5 inches.
Condition report:
Significant enamel loss and chipping is visible along the vertical edges, revealing the metal substrate which shows surface rust (photos 4, 8, 9). There is similar enamel chipping and oxidation around the mounting screws (photos 5, 11). The white enamel surface exhibits general staining and minor crazing (photos 13, 14). The wooden backing board is weathered and shows several old screw holes and scuffs (photo 1). The glass spirit tube remains intact.
