An enamel advertising sign for Craven “A” cigarettes. The rectangular sign features a yellow ground with the brand name in red sans-serif lettering. Below the brand name, the slogan WILL NOT AFFECT YOUR THROAT is printed in black capital letters. The central field is enclosed by a series of stepped borders in graduating shades of orange, ochre, and red, with a narrow black outer edge. The reverse of the sign is finished in black paint with vertical reinforcement lines visible beneath the layer. The sign measures 48.5 inches by 14 inches.
Condition report:
Patches of enamel loss and over-painting are visible to the central yellow field, specifically impacting the letters FF in the word AFFECT (photo 4). Multiple smaller enamel chips with associated surface corrosion are present along the upper and lower edges and at the corners (photos 5, 6, 7). General surface pitting and fine scratching is evident throughout the yellow field (photo 8). There is visible rusting to the outer black perimeter and mounting holes (photo 10). The reverse has been overpainted in thick black paint (photo 12).
