Lot 552: Racing Car Painted Wooden Fairground Rounding Board
1 view
A curved fairground rounding board, hand-painted on a joined wooden panel support. The central image depicts an open-cockpit racing car bearing the number 12, with a driver wearing a leather helmet and goggles. This central vignette is flanked by decorative golden wings set against a dark reddish-brown ground, all enclosed within painted scrollwork and geometric borders in the traditional British fairground style. The verso is finished in a brick red paint, showing the panelled construction of the frame with the numbers 14 and 15 painted in the upper corners. The board retains its original wooden mounting dowels along the lower edge. Based on the visible measuring tape, the panel measures 90 inches in width and 35.5 inches in height at the central arched peak.
90 x 35.5 inches.
Condition report:
Widespread craquelure across the painted surface (photo 1) with areas of flaking and paint loss concentrated primarily along the arched top edge and the bottom border (photos 3, 5). Surface scratches, abrasions, and an accumulation of surface grime are visible throughout (photo 3). Wear is present on the wooden protrusions along the bottom edge (photo 1).
