Lot 525: Two Cycling Advertising Items, John Bull Repair Outfit Tin and Rambler Cycle Ceramic Ashtray

Two pieces of cycling promotional advertising, comprising a lithographed tinplate tyre repair kit tin and a square glazed ceramic advertising ashtray. The hinged rectangular tin features a light blue ground with dark blue lettering reading THE JOHN BULL REPAIR OUTFIT, alongside the trade mark figure and circular slogan MADE FOR THE MAN WHO WILL HAVE THE BEST. The lid rim is marked MADE IN ENGLAND and reads EVINGTON VALLEY MILLS, LEICESTER. Internally, the tin retains a moulded black piece embossed JOHN BULL PATENT CHALK SPRINKLER, a roll of repair fabric, and printed paper packing material. The square white glazed ceramic ashtray features four cigarette rests. One side is printed in green with a bicycle and RAMBLER, a second side with the Rambler Cycle Ashford England monogram logo, a third side reading FAR EAST REPRESENTATIVES THE RAMBLER CYCLE CO. LTD. SOUTHERN TRADING CO. SINGAPORE, and the fourth side with Chinese script. The unglazed recessed base bears a black stamped diamond mark reading GOH BAN HUAT DIAMOND KUALA LUMPUR.
Condition report:
The John Bull tin shows areas of oxidisation, surface rust, and paint loss across the lid and sides, notably to the right section of the lid face (photo 1) and the interior base (photo 2). The ashtray has minor surface marking and dirt to the exterior glaze, a small production glaze flaw near the upper rim above the bicycle transfer (photo 1), and discolouration with shelf wear across the unglazed foot rim (photo 4).
