Lot 318: Red Grouse Ceramic Whisky Decanter
0 views
A hand-painted ceramic whisky decanter modelled as a male Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus scotica) standing on a rocky outcrop. The bird features a brown mottled plumage with characteristic red combs above the eyes and feathered legs. The head section acts as a removable stopper, which fits over a central ceramic neck and pouring spout. The interior of the vessel is finished with a white glaze. While web intelligence suggests a production for Matthew Gloag & Son’s ‘The Famous Grouse’ by Royal Doulton, no maker’s marks or factory stamps are visible on the base or body to confirm a specific attribution.
Height: 9.75 inches.
Condition report:
The decanter is in generally good structural condition. There is a visible blue/grey residue on the underside of the stopper and around the corresponding rim of the body (photo 2). Minor surface scuffs and small areas of paint loss are present, notably on the beak (photo 1) and the textured breast plumage (photo 4). The original cork or seal is missing from the ceramic stopper.
