A Brentleigh Ware Black & White Scotch Whisky advertising figure constructed from earthenware. The display features high-relief models of a black Scottish Terrier and a white West Highland Terrier seated on a black base. The base includes an integrated circular recessed tray to the right side, intended for holding a bottle or ashtray. Raised white-painted block lettering to the front of the base reads ‘BLACK & WHITE’ and SCOTCH WHISKY. The reverse of the figure bears an impressed mark reading MADE IN ENGLAND BRENTLEIGH WARE in two rows of capital letters. The underside features a small incised mark reading 11.
Height: 27 cm (measured to the tip of the West Highland Terrier’s ear).
Condition report:
The figure shows multiple signs of age and wear consistent with commercial bar use. There is significant paint loss and chipping to the white glaze on the West Highland Terrier, particularly visible on the tips of the ears and across the back (photo 1). The black base exhibits chipping to the paint on the front corners and along the lower edges (photo 1, photo 3). The recessed tray shows surface scuffing and paint wear (photo 1). The underside shows manufacturing overspray and minor base wear (photo 3).
