Lot 248: Phillips' Grand Cut Virginia Reverse Painted Mirror
2 views
A vertical rectangular advertising mirror for Phillips’ Grand Cut Virginia. The mirror plate features reverse-painted and gilded lettering, with PHILLIPS’ set in an arch at the top in gold leaf with black outlines. Below, GRAND CUT is rendered in block lettering with a green face and gold and black shading. The word VIRGINIA is set in a reverse arch at the base in gold script. The design is accented with white etched or painted foliate scrollwork to the upper corners and decorative motifs between the text sections. Housed in a dark-stained bevelled wooden frame which retains metal mounting loops to the top and sides.
Condition report:
The mirror plate is in very good condition throughout and both the colouring and the gilding is in a good original state. The wooden frame is in good structural condition with surface scuffs, scratches, and wear consistent with age and use in a commercial environment (photo 1).
