Enamel advertising sign/thermometer for Duckham’s Adcoids featuring a central green thermometer panel flanked by black and white diagonal barber-pole stripes. The upper section is headed with the brand name Duckham’s in green cursive script above three circular vignettes illustrating a hand opening an Adcoids packet, oil being poured from a spout, and a red Morrisol Sirrom engine oil logo. The lower section is lettered in green ADCOIDS SAVE :- POWER, POUNDS, PATIENCE. The central glass thermometer tube is secured by metal brackets and displays a dual scale in Fahrenheit from 0 to 120 and Celsius from -10 to 50. The reverse is finished in a dark coating and features a stencilled white property mark reading The property of Alexander Duckham & Co. Ltd., Duckham House, 16 & 18, Cannon Street, LONDON, E.C. 4.


Condition report:

The enamel ground remains bright with strong colour throughout. There are small chips to the enamel at the corner mounting holes and around the outer edges (photo 1). The metal thermometer brackets show signs of surface oxidation and verdigris (photo 5). The glass thermometer tube is present and appears intact (photo 3). The reverse displays surface rust spotting and remnants of old adhesive or paper (photo 7).
