A Read Brothers of London advertising match striker and spill holder in the form of a bulldog’s head. The piece is constructed from glazed stoneware with hand-painted tan, brown, and black underglaze decoration. The bulldog is modelled wearing a collar which features the incised and brown-painted inscription DOG’S HEAD to one side and GUINNESS to the other. The chest area incorporates a triangular unglazed textured patch for striking matches. The top of the head is open to form a vessel for matches or spills. The underside of the base rim is incised with the characters READ BROTHERS LONDON, along with a small O and a single notch mark.
4 inches high

Condition report:

Several small chips and abrasions are visible to the glaze on the ears and around the upper rim of the vessel (photos 1, 2, and 3). Further chipping and wear are evident along the edge of the blue glazed circular base (photos 1 and 2). The unglazed striking patch shows darkening consistent with use (photo 1). The overall glaze exhibits fine crazing throughout.
